Mogador Airport: gateway to the city of the trade winds

About 15 km south of the town, Essaouira-Mogador Airport (ESU / GMMI) serves one of Morocco's most beautiful coastal cities. Once known as Mogador, Essaouira charms with its fortified medina — a UNESCO World Heritage site — its ramparts battered by the Atlantic, its blue fishing port and its unique bohemian atmosphere.

  • 20 minutes from the fortified medina
  • Morocco's capital of surf, kitesurf and music
  • Served by seasonal flights from Europe

Essaouira, the white-and-blue pearl of the Atlantic

Bathed by the trade winds, Essaouira reveals an immaculate medina with blue shutters, ringed by ramparts built in the 18th century. A former Portuguese trading post called Mogador, the town was redesigned by a European architect, which explains its regular street plan, rare in Morocco. Its medina is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

A city of artists and travellers, Essaouira captivated Orson Welles, who filmed his "Othello" here, and later the makers of "Game of Thrones". Its lanes are full of galleries, thuya-wood marquetry workshops and argan-oil cooperatives. It is an ideal stop to breathe, less than three hours from Marrakesh.

Capital of wind, surf and music

Famous for its steady winds, Essaouira is a world-class spot for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Its wide sandy beach, extended by that of Sidi Kaouki, draws riders from all over the world, while beginners enjoy well-known schools.

The town also beats to the rhythm of music: the Gnaoua and World Music Festival, every summer, turns Essaouira into an open-air stage and draws hundreds of thousands of festival-goers. Between two concerts, you can savour grilled sardines on the port, facing the famous blue boats and the gulls.

Preparing your arrival in Essaouira

Mogador Airport is a small, human-scale airport: passing through is quick and relaxed. On arrival, taxis and car-rental desks let you reach the medina or your riad easily, in about twenty minutes.

Essaouira lends itself to a seaside and cultural stay, but also to excursions: argan cooperatives on the Marrakesh road, the wild beach of Sidi Kaouki, or a walk to the point to admire the island of Mogador. Bring a light jumper: even in summer, the ocean breeze cools the evenings.
